She completed my General Surgery Residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and completed a Breast Surgical Oncology Fellow at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. Her area of expertise is in the management of breast disease, with specialization in the surgical treatment of breast cancer within the James Comprehensive Cancer Center. Dr. Oppong’s surgical expertise includes breast conservation surgery (lumpectomy/partial mastectomy with oncoplastic surgery). In addition, she performs advanced mastectomy procedures, such as modified radical mastectomy and skin- and nipple-sparing mastectomy coordinated with breast-focused reconstructive plastic surgeons. She is also the founding Director of the OSU Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship.
Her academic interests lie in investigating disparities in breast cancer management and outcomes. Dr. Oppong continues to explore disparities in the receipt of care throughout the breast cancer continuum, from screening to survivorship. She also is interested in the impact of breast cancer tumor biology on mortality disparities (i.e., triple negative subtype) and patient characteristics such as metabolic syndrome on breast cancer outcomes. She has an open clinical trial on the use of health-coaching based navigation to support Black breast cancer survivor. She has authored more than fifty peer reviewed publications and book chapters. She also serves as the cancer center’s Deputy Director for the Center for Cancer Health Equity where she focuses on outreach and engagement within the Black community and increasing minority accrual and enrollment in clinical trials.
She serves on committees within three national organizations including the American Society of Breast Surgeons, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the Society of Black Academic Surgeons.
