Dr. Howe is Professor of Surgery and Division Director of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the University of Iowa. He did his General Surgical Residency and Surgical Oncology research fellowship at Washington University, and Surgical Oncology fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He began his career at the University of Iowa in 1996. His basic science research is dedicated to understanding the molecular genetic basis of familial cancer syndromes and neuroendocrine tumors. His early work focused on identifying predisposing genes for MEN2 and Juvenile Polyposis, and more recently on gene expression in neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) and new targets for therapy. He is currently funded by the NIH through the Iowa SPORE grant. His clinical practice is in general Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery with special emphasis on small bowel NETs, pancreatic NETs, and cytoreduction of liver metastases. He is Past President of the North American Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (NANETS) and President of the Society of Surgical Oncology. He has written numerous clinical and basic science articles on the subject of NETs and organized recent NANETS consensus guideline meetings devoted to the surgical management of small bowel and pancreatic NETs.
