Dr. van Houdt has attended medical school at Utrecht University, Utrecht the Netherlands. He also obtained a MS degree in pharmaceutical sciences from Utrecht University. He subsequently finished a PhD program with his thesis called ' targeting solid tumors' at Utrecht University. He did his surgical residency afterwards at University Medical Center Utrecht as well as the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. After finishing his surgical residency, he did a two year international Surgical Oncology fellowship with a focus on sarcoma with funding from the Netherlands Cancer Society (KWF). This two year fellowship brought him to Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori, Milan (Italy) and Mount Sinai/Princess Margaret Cancer Center, Toronto, Canada, and he was a research fellow in the Sam Singers lab in MSKCC, New York. He was than appointed as a surgical oncologist focusing on sarcoma and melanoma in the Royal Marsden Foundation Trust, London, UK. At the end of 2017 he moved back to the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam to be a surgical oncologist in the sarcoma and melanoma unit, and is appointed as program coordinator for rare cancers in his institute. He is involved in several translational and clinical research projects, including co-PI of STRASS-2, and is currently the secretary of the EORTC soft tissue and bone sarcoma study group. He is also appointed as ESMO faculty board member for sarcoma, and is program chair of the CTOS annual meeting of 2021.
