Deshka Foster grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania. She completed undergraduate training at Stanford University. She was awarded a Fulbright scholarship to study malarial disease in Malaysian Borneo, and subsequently earned an M.A. in African Studies from Stanford for malaria research in Tanzania. She attended medical school at Drexel University and returned to Stanford for general surgery residency, where she is currently an administrative chief. During her residency research years, she completed her Ph.D. in Cancer Biology in Michael Longaker’s laboratory through the Advanced Residency Training at Stanford (ARTS) program. Her research interests include cancer associated fibroblasts and abdominal adhesion fibrosis. She has been awarded multiple research grants and awards including an NIH F32 award through the NCI, an American College of Surgeons (ACS) Resident Research Award, and the 2022 Association of Women Surgeons (AWS) Foundation Dr. Hilary Sanfey Outstanding Resident Award. Following completion of her residency training, she will complete fellowship training in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.
