Dr André Ilbawi is the lead for cancer at the World Health Organization.
He is a surgical oncologist with fifteen years of experience in formulating and implementing cancer control programmes, shaping the global cancer agenda, and providing multidisciplinary clinical care with a focus on equity and capacity building.
Upon joining the World Health Organization in 2015, Dr André Ilbawi has supported the substantial expansion of the cancer programme. This includes through the launch and implementation of WHO cancer initiatives in childhood, breast and cervical cancer that are now active in more than 80 countries and are supported by more than 200 international partners. Dr Ilbawi has produced more than 150 health reports and was executive editor of the 2020 WHO Report on Cancer.
Prior to joining WHO, Dr Ilbawi has worked as a surgeon in the USA, Kenya and Rwanda and worked with Médecins Sans Frontière, receiving six awards for excellence in clinical care and humanism.
