Dr. Karakousis is a board certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained surgical oncologist, receiving his
fellowship training at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. He is a Professor of Surgery and Chief, Division of
Endocrine and Oncologic Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and is Chair of the
Cancer Committee of the Abramson Cancer Center. Clinically, he treats hundreds of patients with melanoma
and soft tissue tumors at various stages yearly and is actively involved in the Pigmented Lesion Clinic at Penn as well as on the
Melanoma Leadership team. He is actively involved in educating and mentoring medical students and surgical residents. He is co-investigator on several clinical trials relating to melanoma and has been involved with many of the prognostic biomarker studies on melanoma from Penn. He has over 300 peer-reviewed publications and has given talks nationally and internationally on melanoma. He has served as prior Chair of the Melanoma Disease Site Working Group for the Society of Surgical Oncology and has served on the editorial board melanoma section for several journals.
