Vivian E. Strong, MD is an Attending Surgeon and the Iris Cantor Chair in Surgery at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and a Professor of Surgery and Associate Dean at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. She specializes in the management of patients with Gastric Cancer and Adrenal Tumors at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) and has authored over 180 publications and over 25 book chapters and reviewed and recently edited a textbook entitled, “Gastric Cancer: Principles and Practice” and is co-editor of the “SAGES Atlas of Robotic Surgery”. She received her MD degree from Weill Medical College of Cornell University and completed her residency training at New York Hospital – Cornell. She then completed an advanced laparoscopic fellowship at Cornell and Columbia University before joining the staff at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in 2005. She launched the robotic gastric program at MSKCC and now has performed over 1,000 gastrectomies, almost half of which have been done robotically or laparoscopically, making this the largest experience in the U.S.
From a research perspective, she focuses on translational research in gastric and adrenal tumors and minimally invasive approaches. Currently, she has multiple IRB-approved clinical protocols ongoing at MSKCC.
On a national and international level, she is on the Editorial Board of several journals, including the Annals of Surgery and the Annals of Surgical Oncology and is a member of the National Comprehensive Care Network (NCCN) Esophageal and Gastric Panel since 2007. She also serves on many boards and committees, including the International Gastric Cancer Association, the largest international cooperative organization for the study of gastric cancer. She has also been awarded the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society Teaching Award.
