Dr. Nipun B. Merchant, M.D. holds the Alan S. Livingstone Endowed Chair in Surgical Oncology and is Professor of Surgery, Vice Chair of Surgical Oncology Services and Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology in the Department of Surgery at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. At the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, he serves as the Associate Director of Translational Research, Chief Surgical Officer, and is the Director of the Sylvester Pancreas Cancer Research Institute. He also serves as the Executive Director of Perioperative Services for the University of Miami Health System.
Dr. Merchant has more than 20 years of leadership experience in basic, translational and clinical research and is an internationally recognized hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgical oncologist. He has served on the Pancreas Task Force of the GI Steering Committee of the National Cancer Institute, is a Member of the Commission on Cancer, and Scientific and Medical Advisory Board of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. Simultaneously, Dr. Merchant runs a well-funded and sustained research program investigating tumor-stromal-immune interactions and understanding the role of the tumor and immune microenvironment in maintaining chemoresistance in pancreatic cancer. His laboratory has also translated this work directly into novel therapeutic clinical trials in patients. He is also the PI of a T32 training grant in Surgical Oncology and is the author of over 200 peer reviewed publications, 10 chapters and he has edited two books. He serves on the Editorial Boards of Annals of Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Surgery, and is an Associate Editor for BMC Cancer.
Dr. Merchant is very active in student and resident education, and has been a mentor to numerous medical and graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, residents and junior faculty. He is recognized for his passion in teaching and mentoring the next generation of surgical leaders.
