Resident
University of Maryland Medical Center
John J. (JJ) Newland was born and raised just outside of Philadelphia, PA. As a busy civil engineer and lacrosse player, he realized late in his college career he wanted to pursue medicine. After graduating from college, he returned to Philadelphia and enrolled in the 1-year Thomas Jefferson Post-Baccalaureate program. At the completion of the progam, he spent a year in research at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and eventually matriculated to Sidney Kimmel Medical College where his team-first-attitude and love for finding hands-on solutions to problems led him to a surgical residency at the University of Maryland. With many family members and friends afflicted by cancer, he naturally sought out an interest in surgical oncology. These interests have landed him a basic laboratory at the University of Maryland under the tutelage of Richard Eckert, PhD and Joseph Friedberg, MD studying mesothelioma cancer stem cells, as well as performing clinical research with large data sets under the guidance of Dr. Yinin Hu and the M-SPARC team at the University of Maryland.
