Leah Kathryn Winer was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where she received her B.A. from Washington University in St. Louis in 2009, majoring in Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology. After graduating from college, she worked for two years as a research technician in the Christopher Wells Hobler Laboratory for ALS Research at Washington University School of Medicine under the mentorship of Dr. Timothy Miller MD PhD. She received her MD from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University in 2015 before starting general surgery residency at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center. During residency, she spent two years performing basic science research on sepsis and chronic critical illness with Dr. Chip Caldwell PhD and Dr. Vanessa Nomellini MD PhD. During her final year, she served as the Bower Administrative Chief Resident. She graduated from general surgery residency in June 2022 before moving back to Philadelphia to start her Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship at Fox Chase Cancer Center in August 2022.
