Merrick I. Ross, MD, Professor of Surgery and Chief, Melanoma Section in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Division of Surgery, at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center:
Dr. Ross, who holds the Charles M. McBride Distinguished Professorship in Surgical Oncology, serves as Chief of the Melanoma Section in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Division of Surgery, at MD Anderson, where he has worked and taught since 1989. He has earned several faculty teaching and achievement awards and has been listed often among America’s Top Doctors and America’s Top Doctors for Cancer. As surgical oncologist, Dr. Ross specializes in treating patients with Melanoma and Breast Cancers.
His research focus is on Roles for Sentinel Node Biopsy, Oncolytic Immunotherapy, Neo-Adjuvant Therapy, Gene Expression Profiling, and Completion Node Dissection. Dr. Ross has played leadership roles in several melanoma clinical trials at the institutional, national and international levels. He also has authored or co-authored more than 420 articles in such peer-reviewed scientific journals as Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Surgical Oncology, Annals of Surgery, Oncology Modern Pathology, Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, JAMA Dermatology, Journal of Investigative Dermatology and Journal of Surgical Oncology. He has lectured extensively in the United States and abroad.
Dr. Ross earned his MD at the University of Illinois School of Medicine in Chicago, served a residency in general surgery at the University of Illinois Affiliated Hospitals in Chicago and was administrative chief resident at the University of Illinois Department of Surgery. He completed a research fellowship at Scripps Clinic and Research Institute in La Jolla, California and a surgical oncology fellowship at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.
