Cost: $349 for the Grant Writing Workshop (Part I) and $349 for the Mock Study Section These are separate sessions with their own registrations for each session.
This two-part pre-meeting is intended to provide surgeon-scientists with opportunities to improve grant writing knowledge and skills (Part I) and/or participate in a mock review of research proposals (Part II). Part I and Part II require separate registrations. Participation in Part II requires submission of a proposal and will be by invitation based on submissions.
Part I: Grant Writing Workshop

Plenary Speaker: Martha A. Zieger, MD, National Cancer Institute
This workshop is intended to provide SSO members and junior faculty with education and support on the grant writing process. Faculty will moderate and organize an interactive session touching on numerous aspects of the grant writing process, including lunch with the faculty. This will include federal and non-federal funding, grantsmanship, mentoring, and other topics important to establish a career as a surgeon scientist.
Part II: NIH-Style Mock Study Section- Invite Only: you will not be able to register for part during registration. If selected, a separate email will be sent in February.

Requires a proposal submission and is by invitation based on submissions
R-type or K-type grants in health services, clinical, or basic/translational research from SSO members will be mock reviewed using the National Institutes of Health study section format. Faculty will conduct an NIH-style study section and grant authors can observe the process and receive feedback on their submissions. All proposals selected for participation will receive written critiques; the top proposals will be invited to be reviewed during the live mock study section.
